Lots and Lots of Hamlet...(Hey, I'm not complaining...)
I've actually really enjoyed these past few weeks. I would say now that Hamlet is my favorite of the...five Shakespeare plays I've read over the course of my high school career. I know his character has a bad rep but I think he's rather clever and interesting. As for the movies, I would say I liked the second one very much and I think it left more room for interpretation, which I liked, especially in a play with so much ambiguity that I myself have trouble deciding what to think. I think I now have a strong hold on the characters and motifs in the play and I'm definitely looking forward to this final...hahah
We also recently got back our essays from a while ago. I was satisfied with my essay, but what worries me is the time it takes me to write them. I need to practice setting a time limit for myself so I'm not caught off guard during the AP test.
Shakespeare couldn't be more fun. We've been at it for 2 months now. And to top it we are reading another book on 2 characters from Hamlet. I too enjoyed reading the play Hamlet. It seems like a theme that you read a different Shakespeare play every year, but this one certainly had a different feel. The second film was a very interesting adaption of the play. Personally, I liked the BBC version as it was more how Shakespeare would have liked it. Minimal props and mostly a dull stage, all the focus on the dialogue. As for the essays, I was glad to get them back but was disappointed with myself some of the mistakes that I had made. I do hope, come AP time, these mistakes are ironed out.
ReplyDeleteFor me, Shakespeare is a wild card. I'm not sure whether I like it or not. I watched the Hamlet movie with Kate Winslet first, on my own, and I really liked it. I think I liked it so much because it was so Hollywood-ified. But then I read the play and realized how overly-dramatized it was.
ReplyDeleteI suppose the British do better than we do, at interpreting Shakespeare. :O
I am also worried that I will not be prepared enough for the AP Test, but I think we will be prepared. :)
Roz, I am still trying to decide whether I love Shakespeare or absolutely hate it! When we first read Hamlet I was beyond frustrated. I hate how confusing Shakespeare can be but in the end when tralslated I really loved it! The quotes from Hamlet give you such an interesting insight into life and human nature. I agree that out of the Shakespeare plays I have read this was my favorite. Mostly because we spent so much time on it I eventually grew to love it. When it comes to the essays I wasn't so pleased with my grade! I am not very excited about this AP lit essay at all
